The prevention and fight against money laundering are actions foreseen within the expenditure budget of each year; however, by 2023 contrasts can be noted with respect to what is projected for the instances in charge of combating money laundering.
According to Federal Expenditure Budget Project (PPEF) 2023, for next year the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) in charge of Pablo Gómez would have available resources of the order of 181 million pesos, that is, an increase of 9.5% compared to what was initially approved for this 2022.
According to the document, for the following year the FIU will continue its work of analyzing financial and economic operations that could represent a risk of money laundering or financing of terrorism.
“The Financial Intelligence Unit, in accordance with the regulatory framework for the prevention of money laundering and financing of terrorism, will contribute to the promotion of sustainable development, inclusion and deepening of the Mexican financial system, helping to protect it and the national economy through of the implementation and monitoring of mechanisms for the prevention and detection of acts, omissions and operations that could favor the commission of crimes of operations with resources of illicit origin”, can be read in the PPEF 2023.
For this 2022, the budget contemplated for the FIU is of the order of 157 million pesos, that is, a reduction of 10.5% with respect to what was approved for 2021 and if the proposal is approved for 2023, it would again have increase.
FGR units, those that lose
In contrast, the units of the General Prosecutor of the Republic (FGR) in charge of investigating crimes that could correspond to acts of money laundering, would have decreases by 2023.
According to the PPEF 2023, the Specialized Unit for the Investigation of Fiscal and Financial Crimes of the FGR would receive a budget for the following year of the order of 40 million pesos, that is, a reduction in real terms of 46.3% compared to what initially approved this year.
For its part, the Specialized Unit for the Investigation of Operations with Resources of Illicit Origin and Counterfeiting or Alteration of Currency of the Prosecutor’s Office would receive a budget of close to 56 million pesos next year, that is, an annual reduction in real terms of 8.2 percent.
In total, the three units, both the FIU and the two from the FGR, in charge of preventing, investigating and combating money laundering would have a joint budget of 301 million pesos, that is, a reduction of 8% compared to what was approved. for this 2022.
