Wales has set itself up for the knockout stages of Euro 2020 with a 2-0 win over Turkey, sparked by the mercurial talent of Gareth Bale, who went from hero to villain and back again in Baku.
Bale’s performance showed just why the Welsh star played several seasons as a galactico for Real Madrid, producing some genius moves at both ends of the game.
In injury time, with his team holding onto a 1-0 lead, Bale received a tapped short corner near the end line.
He dragged the ball past one defender, then skipped past another Turkish player before teeing up Connor Roberts for the winning finish, prompting wild celebrations from his team.
Earlier, his superb passing set up Aaron Ramsey for two glorious chances only for the Juventus midfielder to have one shot stopped, and send another looping over the bar when left one-on-one with goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakir.
Finally Ramsey made it count at the third attempt when Bale produced another magic ball to bisect the Turkish defence and put his teammate in on goal.
Ramsey chested the ball down and slipped it into the bottom left corner of the net to give Wales the lead in the 42nd minute.
Bale had a chance to make things comfortable for his side with half an hour to go when he was tripped in the penalty area and stepped up to take the spot kick.
But he was left covering his face in embarrassment after skying his shot well over the bar.
Bale well and truly made up for it, however, with his late assist for Roberts.
The win puts Wales on four points from two games, and regardless of the result of their final outing against Italy, they are almost certain of qualifying for the knockout stages as the third-place qualifier at absolute worst.
In the other game overnight, Russia beat Finland 1-0 thanks to a goal from Aleksei Miranchuk. The result leaves all four teams on three points, although Belgium and Hungary have a game in hand.
