Giant sinkhole opens up on one of Perth’s busiest highways, causing traffic chaos
- Massive sinkhole opens up at major intersection on one of Perth’s busiest roads
- Clean up in Wangara continues with Wanneroo Road closed for much of the day
- Hole emerged early Tuesday due to burst water main, bringing down light post
A massive sinkhole has swallowed up the road on one of Perth‘s busiest highways, sparking widespread chaos.
Crews remain at the scene of the gaping hole at a major intersection in the northern suburb of Wangara on Tuesday, almost 12 hours after the sinkhole emerged due to a burst water main.
A streetlight post also came down at the intersection of Wanneroo Road and Lancaster Road.
Traffic was diverted onto alternative routes, sparking major delays and a nightmare morning commute into work for Perth motorists.

Wanneroo Road is expected to remain closed in both directions between Whitfords Avenue to Prendiville Drive for much of the day.
Crews on bobcats spent the morning frantically pumping water out of the sinkhole and using sand to mitigate the problem as the massive clean up continues.
‘Right outside my place of work. We have had our water cut off. Even the toilets. Total carnage,’ a local worker commented online.
A local resident added: ‘I went past at midnight on my way home from work and the roads were flooded.’
A Perth water bore drilling company described the size of the sinkhole as impressive.
‘Makes retic blowouts pale into insignificance,’ Virgin Bores and Reticulation captioned a photo of the intersection, which remains blocked off.

6PR and Nine News reporter Simon Etheridge said the burst water pipe is still clearly visible in the sinkhole, which also contains large chunks of footpath.
‘It looks like it has opened up directly under the street lights and the street light has fallen as well. They are pumping water,’ he tweeted.
‘The way they have set it up is that the water is being pumped from one side of Wanneroo Road to the other side, and that’s why it’s closed in both direction.’
Another reporter tweeted she had been told by workers that it would be a long morning for them.
Wanneroo Road is a 44 kilometre major arterial road in Perth which links Joondanna and Yokine in the south with Wanneroo and Yanchep in the north.
