Guadalajara, Jal. With the 78th edition of Intermoda, the most important business exhibition for fashion and the textile-garment sectors in Latin America, the Guadalajara metropolitan area will start the sustainability project for the meetings industry, announced the director of the Office of Visitors and Conventions (OFVC), Gustavo Staufert.
“This year, we began work so that Intermoda is the first sustainable fair, not in Jalisco, not in Mexico, but in all of Latin America, and it is the example that we are going to set so that it permeates the entire meetings industry,” said Staufert. Buclon.
He explained that, when Guadalajara was evaluated to be part of the 12 best cities in the world for the meetings industry (it is currently the only Latin American city in the Best Cities Global Alliance ranking), “our most adverse result on which we had to work it was sustainability in the meetings industry.”
As part of the actions that the organizing committee will implement during its 78th edition to be held from January 17 to 20, the CEO of Intermoda, Elena Hurtado, reported that through an alliance with the company Re.colecto, they will install a container at the entrance of the event “to collect those garments that are no longer used.”
The startup is dedicated to collecting textile garments and takes advantage of them either for reuse as sustainable fashion or recycling them in mattresses, cars, buildings or thermal packaging, thereby helping to reduce the carbon footprint generated by their manufacture.
The president of Intermoda, Jorge Castellanos, stressed that “it has been shown that what is not done between now and 2023 will be irreversible for the planet, and 2030 is just around the corner and we have to start working.”
According to the director of the OFVC, in Mexico, the meetings industry generates 22% of all tourist income, which is equivalent to 1.7% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
That means that the meetings industry generates the same as mining in the country. In Guadalajara, it represents 28% of the entire tourist account, which means around 2.5% of our GDP”, stated Gustavo Staufert.
