Between the first and second fortnights of last November, the number of Covid-19 cases registered in Mexico increased 14%, going from 17,770 — from the 1st to the 15th — to 20,288 — from the 16th to the 30th.
According to the report “Covid-19. Two-year situation ”, prepared by researcher Concepción Torres Ramírez of the Equity and Social Rights Area of the Belisario Domínguez Institute of the Senate of the Republic, Mexico ranked sixth among the 20 countries with the highest increase in cases of contagion of the SARS virus- CoV 2 between the two fortnights, after South Africa (309%), France (61%), Argentina (48%), Spain (44%) and Italy (25%).
Regarding the number of deaths, Mexico was placed in the eleventh place, going from 1,320 deaths during the first fortnight of last month to 1,426 in the second; an increase of 8 percent.
The study states that “there is a coincidence between the increase in the number of cases and the presence of Ómicron” and that South Africa was the country, out of 17, with the highest number of cases of this variant, registering an increase of 84.15% among 15 and November 29 of the current year. Until that date, Mexico did not report cases of the Omicron variant, but by December 8, cases of the same amounted to 1.75% of the total cases, against 98.25% of Delta, so it ranked sixth in number of infections of the new variant after the United States, Spain, France, India and Germany.
According to the report, South Africa “is the focus of attention at the present time due to the appearance of the Omicron variant, associated with the increase in cases and deaths during the month of November.
“Mexico ranks 15th worldwide for the total number of cases (accumulated: 3 million 884,566) and 5th for the number of deaths (225) per 100,000 inhabitants,” he says.
As well as that the country “is ranked 17th in the rate of cases / inhabitant, maintaining the same proportion that both indicators had in December 2020”.
Regarding the indicator of the number of deaths, the report cites, “Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and the United States aggravated their situation during 2021 compared to December 2020, as did Mexico, which went from position 7 to number 5” .
