The Japanese Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga, confirmed that North Korea fired two ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan that landed in its waters outside the country’s exclusive economic zone.
According to Kyodo News, an emergency meeting of the Japanese Security Council will be held, with the participation of the Prime Minister, the Secretary-General of the Government and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense.
“CNN” quoted an unidentified American official as saying that the intelligence conclusions indicate that North Korea fired two ballistic missiles, indicating that the intelligence agencies and the Ministry of Defense are currently working on analyzing the operation to determine their type and the extent of their flight.
US officials told Reuters that North Korea launched a new projectile, without providing details on the number or type of target that was discovered.
On Tuesday, the United States stated that North Korea last week carried out two short-range missile launches, while Washington considered these moves to represent “normal military activities,” stressing its readiness for dialogue with Pyongyang.
For his part, US President Joe Biden, commenting on last week’s test, said that the North Korean authorities “did not change their policies much.”
These developments come at a time when negotiations with the United States on denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and the lifting of sanctions on North Korea are in trouble after a historic breakthrough that was achieved in light of the meetings of former US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
