There was a slight recovery in domestic traffic, as a result of the holiday season, which directly benefited pleasure flights and family visits
On December 6, the passenger traffic reading of airport groups and national airlines at the end of November 2021 was released, in which a sequential recovery in international traffic was observed, associated with the deployment of vaccination campaigns and fewer restrictions in certain regions of the world, in addition to benefiting from the winter holiday season.
However, on November 24, the World Health Organization (WHO) was notified of a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, which was detected for the first time in samples collected in Botswana and South Africa, and the new variant was named Omicron variant and classified it as a variant of concern, generating uncertainty and volatility in global markets in the face of a possible border and economic closure similar to last year, in addition to speculating a possible decrease in the national and international mobility index.
On the part of national traffic, there was a slight recovery, as a result of the holiday season, which directly benefited “pleasure flights and family visits.”
On the part of metropolitan flights, we would expect a reactivation in the course of 2022, before a possible return to face-to-face corporate meetings by most of the companies that have a presence in our country.
The annual variations presented below are compared to 2019, since they show a more reasonable comparative base and do not present high volatility compared to the 2020 base as a result of the sharp falls caused by the pandemic.
Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ticker: ASUR) presented an annual increase of 7.2% in passenger traffic as a result of the advances in the airports of Puerto Rico, Colombia and Mexico.
The Cancun airport remains the most important airport for the airport group, which presented progress in the field of national and international passengers, however, we estimate it would show an important performance in the last month of 2021 as a result of the winter holidays, which due to seasonality are the most important, since they present the highest influx of people throughout the year.
On the other hand, we can observe that the San Juan airport, Puerto Rico, showed an annual recovery in domestic traffic; Additionally, Colombia also showed progress in most of its airports, mainly in its domestic traffic.
Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) showed a marginal growth of 0.1% per year generated by an advance in national traffic but with a decline in international traffic. The Guadalajara airport reported a decline in the national category as a result of the decrease in work flights, however, the Tijuana and Los Cabos airports showed a recovery in this category as a result of the reactivation of “pleasure flights”.
On the other hand, international traffic presented a sequential decrease at the end of last November derived from the slight decrease in the influx of people from Canada and the United States due to a possible fear for the new Omicron variant, generating uncertainty among vacationers from said regions, however, we observe a positive performance in the international category on the part of Tijuana, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.
On the part of the Centro Norte Airport Group (OMA), it showed an annual decrease of 9.5% derived from the decline in national traffic, recalling that this item represents approximately 90% of the total, so this drop was caused by the decreases in traffic of passengers in the airports of Monterrey, Culiacán and Chihuahua.
Volaris showed an annual increase of 27.1% driven by positive variations in national and international traffic. On the other hand, Aeroméxico presented an annual fall of 4.9% as a result of a decline in the international category.
We consider that the reading for the last month of the year could show an important positive performance, despite the fear generated by the new variant, since we consider that it would not imply the same impact as the Covid-19 that was seen last year.
We also consider that the reading of national and international passenger traffic would show less volatility during the next year and would be comparable with that of 2021.
