Until last Sunday, the occupancy data for general beds in the country, according to the SSA, stood at 30% and in spaces with respirators at 17 percent.

Concerns increase
These increases in the number of hospitalizations are considered by experts as worrying, while warning that they could increase considerably in the coming days.
“These figures can be somewhat misleading because when we talk about occupation we talk about the entire country, so there are places where there is very little transmission and it has 90% availability, other places in conurbation areas, hospitals are saturated in Covid capacity. It is worrying, we must be vigilant”, said Samuel Ponce de León, coordinator of the UNAM University Health Research Program.
For his part, Mauricio Rodríguez Álvarez, professor at the Faculty of Medicine and spokesperson for the UNAM Commission for Covid-19, explained that the occupation will continue to rise, because hospitalizations are a few days behind in relation to the number of active or outpatient cases.
“This week or the next they will give us figures that are going to speak almost of hospital saturation, simultaneously (…) We are going to see some slightly different saturation reports. They will surely be saturated, we hope that the impact on beds with ventilators and deaths will be much less than the previous wave,” Ponce de León commented.
Pressure on other services
The specialists agreed that as a result of these increases, possible hospital reconversions and even staff absenteeism due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus could affect the health services provided by institutions for other diseases.
“The other phenomenon that can affect or even already does is absenteeism due to Covid cases in health personnel, that can reduce the operation of all services (…) it may be that you have a hospital where health is affected. half of the workforce and that harms the operation of the operating rooms or clinical services,” said Rodríguez Álvarez.
The spokesperson for the UNAM commission also revealed that the pandemic has impacted health services in many aspects, from the interruption of prevention programs to the modification of monitoring of chronic diseases, “the care of many ailments that are resolved surgery” until the change in adherence to treatment such as tuberculosis.
“Undoubtedly all services are affected, right now people who had planned to have surgery on a knee, gallbladder, better think about it and do not go or in the service where they had to go they tell them: we are going to reschedule it because we are not going to be able to attend to it, in the case of chemotherapies, they also reduce the availability of services,” said Ponce de León.
The expert added that Mexico does not have the infrastructure to fight two fronts at the same time. “Our capacities were very poor before the pandemic (and) with it it became even more acute, (and it also) happened in other European countries where they are exceeded.”
