(Trends Wide) — Proud Boys leader Henry “Enrique” Tarrio surrendered himself to a Washington prison on Monday, to begin serving his sentence of more than 5 months for burning a church’s Black Lives Matter banner and bringing in rifle magazines. to the American capital days before the January 6 riots in the Capitol.
Tarrio is in the Central Detention Center in Washington, according to the jail. Tarrio pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors in July and was sentenced last month.
Known as an outspoken national figure in the extremist Proud Boys that support Trump, Tarrio has publicly defended the group and criticized the justice system, even after several members were indicted on federal conspiracy charges related to the riot. The accused Proud Boys members have pleaded not guilty.
Tarrio had left Washington on January 6 and is not charged in federal court. On Saturday, his lawyer appealed to the judge who sentenced him, in an attempt to reduce the 155-day sentence, according to his court file.
