Mikel Arriola, executive president of the MX League, has stated that the main challenge of the Expansion League MX It is not about economic or infrastructure issues, but about perception, as it is a championship that generated negative comments from the public from the first moment of its creation.
“From the decision to put a pause on the rise and fall, criticisms have been generated, but the objective is to maintain competitiveness and prevent cases of teams that rise and generate a systemic risk due to not having financial controls. Today that financial balance is being built in the teams, it is derived from a well-thought-out mechanism to return in order and prevent Liga MX from falling into a process of reduction in value “, said the manager after the last assembly of owners of Mexican soccer of 2021.
After 15 months of operation (started in August 2020, but June and July 2021 were not played), the Expansion League MX has received a total subsidy of 420 million pesos from the MX League, with the aim of improving their material and human structural conditions, since also one of the missions of that money is to promote the growth of young Mexican soccer players.
The subsidy works with two million pesos a month for each team, although not all receive it, since of the 17 participants those who are direct subsidiaries of the First Division are excluded, which in this case are Pumas Tabasco (Pumas), Tapatío (Chivas) and Raya2 Expansión (Monterrey). The remaining 14 do receive it, although they share ownership with Liga MX clubs, such as Dorados de Sinaloa (it belongs to Grupo Caliente, along with Xolos and Querétaro) or as Tampico Madero (of Grupo Orlegi, owner of Atlas and Santos Laguna).
The subsidy will be granted at least until the summer of 2023, so the figure would reach 840 million pesos in total if these 17 teams remain competing, because if another that is not a subsidiary is added, such as Irapuato, the amount could increase.
So far, each team has received 30 million and some have already proposed remodeling projects for their facilities, such as Atlante and Venados de Mérida. The latter has even presented the renders of his Sustainable Yucatan Stadium, which he will share with the baseball team, Leones, and which estimates a budget of 2,000 million pesos.
This newspaper was able to know that, so far, there are five teams that stand out in their financial stability within the circuit of MX expansion: Atlético Morelia, Tampico Madero, Atlante, Dorados de Sinaloa and Mineros de Zacatecas. With the exception of the Zacatecan team, all have had experience in the First Division, although the difference in operating expenses is notorious, because while in MX League they are more than 100 million pesos a year, in Expansión they are between 25 and 30 million.
In 2021 the Raya2 Expansión team was added and none disappeared, as had happened in recent years with the format called Ascent MX, where there was no financial control. Between 1994 and 2020, a total of 72 squads that participated in the so-called ‘Primera A’ or Liga de Ascenso MX completely disappeared, the latter being such as Delfines de Campeche, Altamira FC or Neza.
Sports and networking show on the rise
In the 15 months of the Expansion League, one of its main goals achieved was the platform for Mexican soccer players, reaching a total of 235 debuts. The teams that have contributed the most to this figure are Alebrijes de Oaxaca with 22, Pumas Tabasco and Coyotes de Tlaxcala with 20, as well as Mineros de Zacatecas with 19.
One of the most outstanding elements has been the central defender Luis Olivas, who debuted in this league with Tapatío and only in the summer of this year was promoted to Chivas, where he became a starter over renowned players such as Hiram Mier or Antonio Briseño , even until being considered by Gerardo Martino for the senior national team in the last duel of El Tri, on December 8 against Chile (friendly).
Also in the sporting sense, Dorados de Sinaloa achieved the third highest point record in a short tournament since this format was created in 1996, by achieving 41 units at the end of the current Apertura 2021, a figure that had only been surpassed by América of 2002 with 43 and by Jaguares de Chiapas in 2004 with 42.
Regarding the goal average, the Expansion League it reached 2.4 per game with a total of 327 scored in the regular phase of the Apertura 2021, surpassing the 2.19 achieved by the First Division, which is the lowest figure in its history.
Another figure shared by the communication direction of the Expansion League is that from January to November 2021 it managed to grow 16% in terms of organic followers of social networks, surpassing the 5% reached by Liga MX although below 18 % of the Liga MX Women.
“This represents a tournament of great light for the Expansion League due to all the consolidation that it implies: being the league with the best goal average, with the most debuts, with the largest audience (70% more compared to the last Ascenso MX tournament in the Closing 2020) and growth in social networks. If this league had a promotion, it would possibly be seen in a generalized way with different eyes, but in figures, there are the results “, concludes Rubén Guerrero, communication coordinator at the Expansion League.
