The organization Reporters Without Borders warned that 2022 has already become the year with the highest number of deaths of journalists in Mexico, which “demands urgent action by the government headed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.”
“The list of journalists murdered in Mexico is horrifying and seems to be inexorably lengthening without the federal government or local authorities taking charge of the scale of the problem or making courageous decisions,” said Emmanuel Colombié, director of the Office of Reporters Without Borders in Latin America.
The director of the organization also mentioned that in the face of this “dramatic” record, it is necessary to urgently impose a refoundation of risk prevention, protection and justice mechanisms, as well as the establishment of a comprehensive and lasting policy, which allows guaranteeing the security of information professionals, whose role is crucial for Mexican democracy.
Due to the above, RSF requested an urgent meeting with President López Obrador and his security cabinet to find concrete and immediate solutions to stop this spiral of violence and impunity.
It was also said that this 2022, for the fourth consecutive year, Mexico with 14 crimes, is the most dangerous and deadly country in the world for journalists, ahead of countries at war such as Ukraine (eight cases) or Yemen (three cases). Despite the vertigo caused by these figures, of the 15 journalists murdered this year, President López Obrador has only publicly condemned five.
The organization also detailed that 10 of these cases are directly related to its informative work.
Since AMLO took office as head of the federal Executive, RSF has recorded at least 36 murders of journalists and two disappearances, those of Jorge Molotzin Centlal and Pablo Felipe Romero Chávez.
“Most of these murders are concentrated in states especially gangrenous by corruption and organized crime: Michoacán (southwest), Sonora and Veracruz (southeast), with five cases each. In the vast majority of these 38 cases, impunity is almost total,” said the NGO.
