Russian Anastasia Gasanova blew a loud surprise today, Saturday, in the Abu Dhabi Tennis Championship, after she reached the third round by beating the former world number one, Karolina Pliskova.
The rising Russian player from the qualifiers defeated her veteran Czech opponent, currently ranked sixth in the world, with two consecutive sets, with a score of 6-2, 6-4, after a match that lasted only 72 minutes.
“I wasn’t on the pitch,” Gasanova told reporters after the match, showing signs of great happiness.
She added, “I do not believe what really happened. But I told myself today, after waking up, why not? Is there a reason why I could not win the match? In fact, I expected defeat during the qualifiers or the like. But I kept encouraging myself to win.”
The 21-year-old will meet in the next round with Spain’s Sarah Soribes Tormo, ranked 66 in the world.
Gasanova, ranked 292 in the world, won her first match at the level of the professional championships, when she passed the first round of the Abu Dhabi championship, to set a date with Pliskova and to face her first confrontation with a player belonging to the list of the first 100 ranked in the world.
