Human rights organizations and family members of US activists said that the Saudi authorities released them on bail pending their trial.
On Thursday, the authorities released Badr Al-Ibrahim, an epidemiologist and journalist, and Salah Al-Haidar, a media commentator and son of Aziza Al-Youssef, a prominent advocate for women’s rights.
The sessions were scheduled for the seventh and eighth of February, in order to continue their trial on terrorism-related charges, and the two have been imprisoned since April 2019.
The Freedom Initiative, a Washington-based human rights organization, said that their release was “a welcome development, although it is long overdue.”
She added in a statement that “Dr. Badr Al-Ibrahim and Salah Al-Haidar should not have been imprisoned in the first place, and their release should not have been temporary.”
Amnesty International also welcomed their release and called on the Saudi government to release “all journalists, activists and human rights defenders, immediately and without conditions.”
US President Joe Biden had said that he would take a tougher stance towards the kingdom’s human rights record.
