Cancun, QR. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) approved the Environmental Impact Statement of Section 6 of the Mayan Train, which goes from Tulum to Chetumal, without having geological and geohydrological studies that allow ruling out collapses in the line of the railway.
In the recommendations made by the College of Civil Engineers of Mexico (CICM) during the public consultation of the document, it can be read verbatim: “the petitioner’s proposal is anticipated and lacks technical support.”
“It is obvious that the promoter cannot know if the projected line will cross over large conduits or caverns if they have not carried out the necessary geophysical studies and surveys to determine its existence or absence,” the document states.
“In this regard, it is worth noting the need for geophysical surveys and direct calibration explorations to be sufficient in number or density to provide, as far as possible, knowledge of the subsoil in the strip of the T6 line, with the continuity that allows detecting the presence of cavities of significant size and, where appropriate, the probable thickness of their roof, an excessive spacing between boreholes could miss some of them and they do not have to be of gigantic dimensions to cause a collapse or settlement of the ground” , add.
However, as with Section 5, Semarnat’s General Directorate for Environmental Impact and Risk (DGIRA) gave authorization for the project and a period of three months for the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur) to submit the extemporaneous geohydrological and geological studies to locate possible collapse zones, according to resolution ending DG-04962-22.
In other words, the project was approved environmentally without having carried out the studies that would determine if there will be an impact on the environment and without the exact knowledge of the risk areas, because the studies that should have complemented the Environmental Impact Statement had not been carried out, such as It is recommended by the CICM.

As for other specifications, it is established that Section 6 of the Mayan Train has a length of 250.8 kilometers between the cities of Tulum and Chetumal, which implies that the area affected by the jungle due to right of way and works is 1,582.13 hectares, of which which 1,459.05 are considered as forest land for land use change (CUSTF), that is, 92.22% of the total project.
It will have a double track, suitable for mixed traffic (passengers and cargo), with a maximum project speed of 160 km/h for passenger trains and a minimum of 85 km/h for freight trains.
The main components considered in the project that Semarnat will evaluate are a hybrid biodiesel locomotive in accordance with the California environmental standard, a diesel-electric train; three stations: Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar and Chetumal; whereabouts: Tulum and Limones; five slopes; maintenance base in Felipe Carrillo Puerto and garages in Tulum; workshops and garages in Chetumal, 56 vehicle crossings, wildlife crossings and drainage works.
