Scott Morrison has promoted key allies in a cabinet reshuffle after a busy and difficult year that has seen the federal government’s popularity soar.
Alex Hawke, from the Liberal Party’s powerful centre-right faction in New South Wales, has been promoted as the new immigration minister.
Mr Hawke, a former NSW Young Liberals president, was instrumental in helping Mr Morrison secure the numbers against Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton in August 2018 to replace Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister.
Simon Birmingham has lost the trade portfolio just two days after complaining about China to the World Trade Organisation.
Dan Tehan, who was previously the Education Minister, has been elevated as Australia’s new trade minister.
Senator Birmingham given the trade, investment and tourism portfolios in August 2018.
The leading Liberal moderate from South Australia already had a busy workload as the new Finance Minister on top of being the Government Leader in the Senate.
