The African Union condemned in the strongest terms the violence in the Central African Republic and called for peaceful elections.
In a statement, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, expressed his deep concern about the development of the political and security situation in the Central African Republic, and condemned in the strongest terms the acts of violence in some areas of the country that caused loss of life and impeded the ongoing electoral process.
Faki Muhammad also condemned “any collusion between some political actors and armed groups,” and reminded all political actors in the Central African Republic that elections remain the only legitimate means to gain power, calling on all concerned parties and the entire population of the country for calm and restraint.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission reaffirmed the solidarity of the African Union and its support for the people of Central Africa, stressing the firm commitment of the continental organization, along with the Economic Community of Central African States and the regional mechanisms, to support the conduct of democratic, transparent and credible elections.
In support of the efforts of the Central African government, the African Union Commission will deploy an election observation mission alongside the United Nations, the Economic Community of Central African States, and other international organizations, the statement added.
