In mid-summer, various rumors indicated that Sean Marks was hoping to sign an extension to Kyrie Irving before the season started. However, as the start of the course has approached, the conversations regarding the base have had very little to do with this supposed extension. And it is that, in what surely he also trusted general manager of the Nets is for Irving to comply with New York City vaccination protocols.
Now, with five days to start the season and Kyrie unvaccinated and away from the team until he does, the desire of the franchise regarding renewal seems to be different. According to Shams Charania, a journalist from The Athletic, the maximum extension offer worth 187 million that the New Yorkers were preparing will no longer be offered to the player, who could be a free agent in 2022 or remain in the Nets through a player option of 36.5 million dollars.
The truth is that the situation is not in a hurry, and if things change the base could sign this extension before the end of his contract. Still, one wonders if, even with vaccinations or permission to play, the Nets would choose to sit back and negotiate or if they are so tired of Irving’s unpredictable nature that they will just happily open the door for him as soon as their contract ends.
It does not seem, however, that the waters are going to calm down anytime soon, as the player has recently stated that his intention is not to get vaccinated as a way of giving voice to those who do not want to do so. So we could be talking about Irving missing the entire season, which would not only truncate any option to sign an extension, but perhaps wipe him out of the Nets before the end of the course.
