The open day to the press began with a bombing in New Orleans. David Griffin came out in front of the microphone to announce that Zion Williamson had undergone surgery for a foot injury that would prevent him from playing the preseason with the team. The tone used by the general manager and the player himself suggested that the recovery was developing on good terms and that Zion would be ready to start the season. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The days advance and the doubts regarding the physical state of Williamson increase. Last Monday Willie Green confirmed that he is not yet ready to exercise with the group and that he does not know when he will be. Right now, he’s just doing cardio and fitness routines. This whole affair is tempered by reports of the Pelicans’ mismanagement in treating Zion’s first injury as a professional before making his NBA debut.
This season should be crucial for the franchise to ensure the continuity of Williamson, and repeating the tensions of the past could be the first stone in the coffin of a relationship to be channeled with a view to the player signing the extension exactly one year from now. For now, five days before the start of the season, all the expectations raised regarding Zion’s foot threaten not to be fulfilled.
