US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the lifting of all restrictions previously imposed by the United States of America on its relations with
Taiwan, in a move considered by observers as a new blow from Washington to China.
“Today I announce that I lift all these self-imposed restrictions,” Pompeo said, in a statement published by the State Department on its website, adding that “agencies of the executive branch should consider all ‘communication guidelines’ related to relations with Taiwan previously issued by the State Department … null and void.” .
Taiwan has been running since 1949 authorities that do not recognize the legitimacy of the governmental system in the rest of the Chinese territories, while Beijing considers the island one of its provinces.
The United States cut bilateral relations with the Taiwan administration in 1979 and has since followed the “one China” policy, but contacts between Washington and Taipei have witnessed a remarkable strengthening in recent years due to the increasing tension between Washington and Beijing, which angered the Chinese.
