Francisco Raúl Álvarez Córdoba, president of the Citizen Participation Committee of the National Anticorruption System, pointed out that journalists are the main citizens who file the most complaints for corruption cases.
During the forum “Transparency and access to information as a tool of civil society in the fight against corruption”, organized by the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI), Álvarez Córdoba commented that the work of reporters and communicators must be highlighted for their constant investigation; however, he regretted that for the same reason they are a vulnerable and attacked group.
“Recognition is given to journalists, reporters and communicators, who by exercising the right to access information have discovered and denounced cases of corruption such as: La Estafa Maestra, Odebrecht in addition to other cases of corruption”, he mentioned.
“Journalists do the work that the authorities fail to do and they are the ones who have paid with their lives,” he added.
He commented that from 2000 to 2022 there have been 164 murders of journalists in Mexico, and that the attacks are due to journalistic work.
“The lack of guarantees for the exercise of fundamental rights has been normalized, corruption and impunity have stopped the exercise of freedom of expression,” he emphasized.
On the other hand, the member of the CPC of the SNA highlighted the importance of transparency and citizen participation that lies in a focus on preventing corruption and helping to render accounts.
“The National Anticorruption System (SNA) should focus its attention on the effects that corruption generates in the full exercise of rights in Mexico and thereby really put the victims of this scourge at the center of action,” said Francisco Raúl Álvarez. Cordova.
bribery in education
In the same forum, it was discussed that access to information as a tool to combat corruption should be used more in the educational system.
It was recalled that in 2014 there was an embezzlement in the Contribution Fund for Basic and Normal Education (FAEB).
The panelists commented that a national census was called and it was found that there were people assigned with a teacher’s position with up to 15 places, in addition to 1,800 deceased who continued “teaching classes.”
“There is a correspondence between the right to know and the right to learn; Not knowing what is happening in public schools means not knowing what will happen to the future of Mexico’s children,” said David Calderón Martín, Executive President of Mexicanos Primero.
