Sexual and reproductive health is a problem within the prisons in Mexico, for the women especially.
According to figures from the ENPOL (National Survey of Population Deprived of Liberty) of the Inegi, 6 out of 10 women in prison have not had a Pap smear in the last year; 1,131 women have been or are pregnant and 20% of them do not go or go to medical attention to monitor their pregnancies.
Only 38% of the women received free contraceptives at the prison and about 17% of women living with HIV do not take treatment to control the virus.
The survey also showed that there is a higher incidence of suicidal thoughts or attempts in the female population in prison with respect to the masculine.
