US President Donald Trump granted amnesty to George Papadopoulos, a former aide in his election campaign, who admitted the charges against him in the investigation of allegations of interference by Russia in the 2016 elections, and Trump also pardoned Alex van der Zwan, who was sentenced to 30 days in prison and a fine of 20 thousand dollars for charges. Lying to the investigators of the United States’ special advisor Robert Mueller about contacts with an official in the 2016 Trump campaign, according to Russia Today.
Papadopoulos was an advisor to the 2016 Trump campaign, and in 2017 he admitted to deceiving FBI agents about the timing and significance of his contacts with people who claimed they had ties to top Russian officials.
He served 12 days of a 14-day prison sentence in federal custody, then was released under supervision for 12 months.
The White House said Papadopoulos was accused of committing “a crime related to the process, which is the accusation of making false statements” as part of the Mueller investigation, which Trump denounced as a “witch hunt.”
“Today’s amnesty helps correct the mistake that Mueller’s team made on a lot of people,” the White House added.
