Turkish police fired tear gas and chased protesters in a narrow street in Istanbul, while student demonstrations escalated for weeks in protest against President Erdogan’s decision to appoint a university president.
Eyewitnesses and the media estimated between 50 to 60 people had been arrested in Istanbul by Tuesday evening.
For weeks, Turkey has been witnessing demonstrations on the campus of major universities to protest the appointment of Melih Polo, a loyalist of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s party, as president of the prestigious Bosphorus University in Istanbul at the beginning of the year, as police arrested 159 students when they confronted a demonstration on the campus on Monday night.
The demonstration was banned for reasons related to the new Corona virus, but opposition MPs nevertheless came to participate, while the sounds of knocking cooking utensils were heard throughout the city, after the organizers asked their supporters to make a noise to show strength.
The youth demonstrations recall the 2013 protests, which erupted in opposition to the project to destroy a park in Istanbul, before spreading across the country to represent a direct threat to the Turkish president’s rule.
