Ukraine claimed this Friday the reconquest of dozens of towns in the Kherson region, a strategic city in the south of the country, where the Russian occupation administration is evacuating thousands of civilians to turn it into a military “fortress”.
“Kherson region: 88 localities recovered,” an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, Kirilo Timoshenko, said on Telegram, without specifying when they were reconquered.
the ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskywelcomed the “good results” of the counteroffensive launched at the end of September, which allowed the Ukrainian army to recover territory and seize weapons and ammunition from the occupation troops.
The Ukrainian advance to the east and south recently gained new momentum on the southern flank of Kherson, the first major Ukrainian city to fall to the Russians in March.
According to the Russian occupation authorities, four people were killed, two of them journalists, during a nightly Ukrainian bombardment of the Antonivskiy Bridge, located on the Dnieper River and used for evacuations.
Ukraine denied targeting civilians. “We are not targeting critical infrastructure. We are not targeting peaceful towns and villages,” a Ukrainian military spokeswoman, Nataliya Gumenyuk, said on television.
“Fortaleza”
Faced with the Ukrainian advance, the Russian occupation authorities declared that they were turning the city of Kherson into “a fortress”.
They also urged civilians to cross to the left bank of the Dnieper River.
On Thursday, the deputy head of the Russian occupation of Kherson, Kiril Stremusov, said some 15,000 people had already left. His administration plans to displace “50,000 to 60,000” in the coming days.
The secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, stated that these evacuations are actually a “mass deportation” that seeks to change “the ethnic composition of the occupied territory.”
mined dam
In the same region, Ukraine accused Russian forces of having placed mines in the Kajovka dam, to cause a “catastrophe”.
If the dam bursts, “more than 80 towns, including Kherson, will be in the flash flood zone,” Zelensky warned.
“This could destroy the water supply of a large part of southern Ukraine” and affect the cooling of the reactors at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which gets its water from the 18 million cubic meter artificial lake, he added.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Chmygal on Friday called for the “immediate” dispatch of an international observation mission for the dam.
In recent days, Russia has targeted Ukraine’s power plants, forcing the country to restrict electricity consumption.
