The two votes of the consultation called by the Independent Union of Workers of the Volkswagen Automotive Industry (Sitiavw) resulted in a rejection of the majority of the workers to accept an 11% salary increase, which strains the relationship with the company, because this could lead to a strike on September 9 at 11:00 in the morning.
The vision of the Sitiavw Review Commission did not convince the majority of the workers, despite the fact that the negotiation took more than a month, since since June the petition was delivered in which a 15.7% increase was requested, to be negotiated.
Given this situation, the company expressed that they are “deeply disappointed” by the voting result, since it “disregards the context and the challenges we face as an industry.”
With the labor reform, all the negotiations carried out by the union with the company must be submitted to the vote of the workers. For salary reviews every year, and for contractual reviews every two years; Hence, in this new context, the workers decided, on two occasions, to reject the agreement presented.
The proposal that the company granted, and that the union board agreed, contemplates an increase of 11% – made up of a 9% direct increase in salary and 2% in benefits – which is not expected to be modified, which puts in risk of going on strike.
In this sense, the company issued a statement highlighting that “this result is damaging a relationship built for more than 50 years,” said Volkswagen de Mexico’s Corporate Communications and Government Affairs department.
Likewise, she said she was concerned that “interests outside the working life of the company have influenced the voting process, impacting the result based on false arguments and without any foundation.”
The disagreement of the 3,456 workers forces the union leadership headed by José Juan Hernández, to look for a better proposal that meets the needs of the workers, but that at the same time contemplates the situation in which the industry finds itself.
For now, both the company and the union will await the qualification of the process by the Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration. The summons to strike filed for such purposes by the Independent Union of Workers of the Volkswagen Automotive Industry (Sitiavw), expires on September 9, although it is possible that an extension may be presented to carry out a new negotiation.
