Research shows that people with high blood pressure who eat walnuts as part of a healthy diet can see significant changes in their blood pressure, according to the report published on the Express website.

Some of the main signs of high blood pressure include:

  • headache
  • pain in chest
  • feeling tired
  • breathing difficulties
  • arrhythmia

Research suggests that eating walnuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat may help improve central blood pressure in those at risk for heart disease, compared to a diet low in saturated fat based on omega-3 fatty acids.

A second study also revealed the relationship between improved heart and gut health after eating walnuts as part of a balanced diet. The results showed that eating walnuts enriched some of the gut bacteria in the digestive system associated with improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol.

Researchers believe that the secret may be due to the unique combination of bioactive compounds, fatty acids and dietary fiber found in walnuts.

Walnuts can be introduced as part of an overall healthy diet, as studies show that a Mediterranean diet can also reduce the risk of high blood pressure symptoms.

Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid that cannot be made in our bodies but it is a vital nutrient that we must make sure we get enough of through the diet to stay healthy.

Eating a handful of walnuts daily (30 grams) can have a positive effect on the elasticity of blood vessels and thus can help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.
