The Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL Guadalajara) is just around the corner and with it the participation of the emirate of Sharjah as Guest of Honor and ambassador of the Arab world after not having been able to achieve the distinction in 2020 due to the face-to-face cancellation of the most important editorial meeting in speech hispanic
This Tuesday, the chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameriand the director of Fairs and Festivals, Khoula Al Mujainimade the formal presentation of their program and other details about the Arab presence in the Jalisco capital.
The Emirati delegation will be made up of some 200 people, Al Mujaini announced, among whom 15 will be authors, 5 illustrators and 8 artists or groups.
“We have translated 57 books from Arabic to Spanish of different genres”, shared the director of Fairs and Festivals of Sharjah. “We have novels, poetry and also scientific research and travel literature; There are also children’s books. They will all be available on the shelves of the Sharjah space.”
For his part, the Chairman of the Authority declared: “As you know, historically we Arabs are famous for being good storytellers and we have fiction and non-fiction, but we are also known for our poetry and now for science. We will take scientists with us. So we are going to represent all Arabic literature in Guadalajara, especially the novel, poetry and science”.
From an analysis of the impact of Arabic on our language to the status of the film industries in Mexico and the Emirates, through Arabic poetry readings and an approach to the ancient art of calligraphy, Sharjah will seek to contribute one more bit to the opening of the Middle East to the world
In search of feathers in Spanish
The Emirati authorities did not specify which Mexican or Spanish authors are of interest to publishers and the Arab public, nor which books have been or will be translated into their language as part of Sharjah’s presence in Guadalajara, an occasion that, they remarked, should be the best opportunity to strengthen the cultural exchange between both.
Al Ameri explained: “We are working to have more translations from Arabic to Spanish, especially the publishers (they are working on that). For several years now, Mexican publishers have traveled to the Sharjah Book Fair to buy and sell rights, so we continue to build this relationship between Mexico and Latin America with the Arab world.”
Only two books are known, both for children, by Mexican authors that will be presented at the Sharjah pavilion: “Fridu, Friducha, Frida: a family day”, by Ricardo Sánchez Riancho, and “Why does Fer not want to grow up? ?”, written by Francisca Escobar Méndez, who was the Mexican ambassador to the United Arab Emirates until 2021. Both titles were published in Arabic by the Kalimat label, whose director is Bodour Al Qasimi, also president of the International Publishers Association (IPA). ).
“In 2019 Mexico was Guest of Honor at the Sharjah International Book Fair and we were close to many Mexican authors, but we will continue looking for more authors to come to the fair or to the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival and present literature in Spanish to the Arab world. We will do the same”, completed Al Ameri.
Finally, the president of the Authority shared that in the United Arab Emirates there are about 200 publishers and about 1,000 new titles are published every year, many of them are translations, since there is a high demand among the Emirati public.
Finally, he was asked what the investment would be for the emirate’s cultural and publishing presence in our country. “We are not worried about how much money we are going to invest. We are more concerned with transferring our literary culture to the Spanish-speaking world and that is more valuable than money. We are not calculating the economic investment but the impact of bringing both cultures closer together”.
