To celebrate the 100 years of Mexican muralism and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Desiderio Hernandez Xochitiotzinthe work of the artist born in Tlacatecpac, Tlaxcala, in 1922, occupies the Miguel de la Madrid Hall of the Los Pinos Cultural Complex since September 14, through 98 easel works and four reproductions of murals created in the Government Palace of Tlaxcala, which make up the exhibition “DH Xochitiotzin. 100 years of muralism”.
The exhibition is a collaborative effort between the Federal Ministry of Culture, the Culture Secretaries of the governments of Puebla and Tlaxcala, and the Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin Foundation.
During the inauguration, held last Wednesday, the muralist’s daughter and president of the Foundation, Citlalli H. Xochitiotzin Ortega, emphasized the importance of her father’s work as a link between two art eras in Mexico:
My father celebrates 100 years of life, he was 19 years old when he lived with Doctor Atl, he participated in social gatherings with Frida (Khalo), he was able to take Diego (Rivera) to the Artist’s Neighborhood “.
For her part, the National Coordinator of Visual Arts of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), Mariana Mungía Matute, stressed the importance of recognizing the work of Desiderio Hernandez Xochitiotzin “as the last of the great Mexican muralists and as the most prominent narrator of the history of Tlaxcala, the cradle of the Mexican nation and miscegenation, who was also a teacher of generations of artists.”
The Secretary of Culture of Tlaxcala, Antonio Martínez Velázquez, recognized that thanks to the work of INBAL “today we know that Xochitiotzin is one of the great muralists of Mexico, because his work has very special characteristics, the theme of his painting has to do precisely with the beauty of the everyday, the beauty of the small, of what is in the traditions, in the towns, in the houses”.
The plastic artist, chronicler and researcher Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin is considered the last great Mexican muralist and was recognized by the Congress of the state of Tlaxcala with the honorary title of Ambassador of the Tlaxcalteca Culture, for immortalizing the culture and history of Tlaxcala and Mexico in his works. His most iconic work “The history of Tlaxcala and its contribution to the Mexican” is found in The walls of the Government Palace of Tlaxcala. It is made up of more than 450 square meters of plastic workdivided into the blocks: Pre-Hispanic Tlaxcala, The Conquest, The Tlaxcalan Golden Age and From the Age of Enlightenment to Porfirism in Tlaxcala and Mexico.
The exhibition is free to enter and will be open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Miguel de la Madrid Hall of the Los Pinos Cultural Complex.
