The president and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC, for its acronym in English, Julia Simpson, considered that for the sector it is a priority to work on decarbonization and protection of the environment, which will only be a reality with close collaboration of the public and private sectors, as is already the case in some countries.
In the case of Mexico, he suggested that the federal government grant incentives to businessmen who are already carrying out actions on the subject, because this encourages the arrival of tourists.
“The hoteliers who are our partners are working hand in hand with the public sector. We have to comply with environmental actions together with the government. It is a task that cannot be done alone. An example: in the United States they recently published a law with tax incentives for airlines to invest in biofuels”, he added.
To date, Aeroméxico, Volaris and VivaAerobus have carried out operations with some participation of biofuels, without knowing if they had any federal support. In addition, there are hotels that use renewable energy.
In a videoconference, Julia Simpson recalled that this week she is in New York participating in Climate Week, which resumes its face-to-face format, to show part of the progress made in the commitment they made in 2019 to reduce the effect of carbon by 50%. % by 2050 in all segments related to tourism.
“At that time we made a promise that we have fulfilled, because we published the path that we are going to follow for the entire sector: airlines, airports, hotels, distributors, cruise ships. Everyone has different challenges and it is important to start mitigating the big negative effects on nature: fire or floods”, he added.
The return of tourism
In the meeting with the Mexican media, the CEO of the WTTC reiterated the good behavior of tourism in the recovery process and that it will be until 2023 when Mexico returns to pre-pandemic levels (2019) and that from then on it will grow again more than the national economy.
For the end of this year, it estimated a value in the Travel and Tourism sector of 191,000 million dollars and the creation of 420,000 new jobs, to reach nearly 6.5 million jobs.
